Just Like Heaven
Successful doctor, Elizabeth, has a car accident that puts her in hospital in a coma. Her family eventually have to rent out her apartment as her condition doesn’t change. David moves in to Elizabeth’s place, and is haunted and hounded by Elizabeth’s ghost. Neither of them know what’s going on, especially Elizabeth who can’t remember anything about herself. Eventually David empathises with Elizabeth’s situation and helps her find out who she is.
It seems like an impossible script for a romantic ending to be possible – but this is Hollywood! – and the pair fall in love.
I quite like Reece Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo so don’t mind this movie. It’s fairly typical of the 2005 rom com style – two main actors taking care of most of the script and driving the narrative, the female always in the spotlight. One of the pair is usually controlling or crazy or not interested in relationships, or needs a calming influence – in this case it’s Elizabeth. So it’s fairly predictable, but the script is a little less so, and it’s a decent middle range rom com.
