Melanie Laurent, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer
In the midst of sadness, Oliver meets Anna. Here is his chance to find happiness again, but it’s a hard road. The story of their romance is interdispersed with Oliver’s childhood flashbacks, and more recent flashbacks when his dad was ill. All their happiness is drowning in sadness and painful memories. (I’m not sure that this film should have been classified as a romantic comedy.)
McGregor is excellent as Oliver and the film was very well made. It side-stepped all the usual 21st Century rom com themes, but did give us the fundamental ‘boy meets girl’. In this film, life is not simple and happy, life is clearly not a rom com. But don’t get me wrong, it’s not too depressing. There are some funny moments and some very teary ones. It quite reminded me of the style of 500 Days of Summer. If you’re sick of the usual guff, it’s worth a watch.
