As you would be well aware, this movie is a remake of the 80s flick of the same name, starring Dudley Moore.
Same plot line – rich, alcoholic, playboy, Arthur, will lose his substantial inheritance unless he settles down and marries. But he can’t marry just anyone – he is lined up to marry successful businesswoman, Susan. This all happens at the same time that he meets and falls in love with Naomi – not rich or successful, but fun and a good influence on Arthur.
Arthur has to decide between love and money. It’s a fairy tale ending really – he doesn’t miss out on either, but he made the right decision to get there.
I know people are divided on Russell Brand – those that think him sexy, and those that can’t stand him. I’m in the middle. But regardless of what you think of him, poor Brand, he had to live up to the high standard set by Dudley Moore. He does an okay job, and has the ability to make you laugh – but there wasn’t a lot of laughing to be had and the script wasn’t nearly as good as the original.
I would prefer to see the original flick (where Hobson was a man, played by Mirren in the remake), and even though it’s dated it can still hold its own. Watch this flick if it comes on TV and there is nothing else on, it’s not all that bad.
