How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
Sidney Young (Pegg) is a small time English writer who gets his big break and heads off to a job in New York city. He now works for a very slick magazine in the glitzy star section – but he has no style or New York pizzaz. His only ally is his workmate, Alison (Dunst).
Despite developing romantic feelings for Alison, Young doggedly goes after super starlet, Sophie Maes. When he works his way up the magazine, Sophie starts to notice him. He now knows how to dress, to dance, to act – but it’s not him, the real him that Alison falls in love with. Sidney and Alison go their separate ways but neither is happy and they need to follow their hearts back to each other.
This is a pretty good film with terrific support actors like Fox, Anderson and Bridges. Pegg is an unusual choice for a rom com male lead but he carries it off well. There is a gorgeous romantic ending with him and Dunst.
I’m beginning to think that the rom com hey day was in the year 2008. I’m busy finding all the rom coms from this year and giving them a watch or a re-watch and a review. I’m finding that the plots are not complicated, they don’t try too hard to be funny, and they don’t pack in too many stars – faults I’m finding with more recent romantic comedies.
This is quite a solid pick down at the video shop or to stream.
