Welcome to 2014

We're the MillersLook out for some new film reviews on romcomblog. Now that the list of 21st Century romantic comedy film reviews is pretty much up to date, I will be bringing you more newly released film reviews, and less ‘back fillers’, as well as some analysis of what’s happened over the last 13 years on the rom com screen.

Romantic Comedies watched this week

Here are some more old rom coms to fill in gaps in my list. This week we had some from 2002-2004, plus a 2006 and 2007.MV5BMTMwOTgwMjg0OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDc3MDMwMg@@._V1_SY317_CR5,0,214,317_

This Week’s Fillers

MV5BMTk2NDEwNzU2NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDI3ODcyMQ@@._V1_SY192_SX129_Here’s what I’ve watched this week, to fill in some holes in my rom com list. We have Good Luck Chuck with Dane Cook and Jessica Alba, My Super Ex-girlfriend with Uma Thurman, I Could Never Be Your Woman with Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd, Maid in Manhattan with Jennifer Lopez, Gurinda Chada’s Bride and Prejudice, and Starter for 10.

The only one out of this lot that I would recommend would be the Austen Goes Bollywood – Bride and Prejudice. But if you are a Clueless fan as I am, it’s worth getting I Could Never Be Your Woman (but it’s not nearly as good so don’t get too excited).

Fillers

Still working on the back catalogue. Some made it into the Wedding Rom Com List, but none made it into the Recommended List.  Common elements have included the use of a best friend, and the use of dishonesty as a comedic tool.

Fillers will continue until no rom com has been left unturned (actually I think that will be impossible, but at least I’ll have a fairly substantial list). Films this week from 2008 have been:

Over Her Dead Body
My Best Friend’s Girl
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
The Accidental Husband
Made of Honour

Rom Com Fillers

I’ve been reviewing some early 21st Century rom coms to fill in some gaps. These have included: Carolina, Suddenly 30, Shallow Hal, PS I love You, The Wedding Planner, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, and Amelie.

The list never ends! But never fear, some latest release reviews will be appearing soon.

Wedding Rom Coms

MV5BNzk3MjA1NzE5OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTQ0NTcxOA@@._V1_SX214_Here is a list (most likely incomplete) of rom coms about weddings starting from the year 2000. Is it my imagination or is this whole wedding thing popular at the moment?

Common themes and issues that come up in the rom com wedding movie in the 21st Century are:

  • sibling gets married and so the other sibling has feelings of envy or disillusionment with own life
  • sibling gets married and other sibling is a non-commitment person
  • friend gets married and other friends have feelings of envy or disillusionment with own life
  • friend gets married and best man or other friends are non-commitment people

Here is my list so far:

100 Films Reviewed

I have reviewed 100 films starting from the year 2000!!

The list continues to grow of course. However, there are a lot of films that I missed in the early years, so bear with me as I try to fill in some gaps along the way.

Please add my site to your lists and share with friends. Thank you and happy rom com watching.

Bad Boy Makes Good

One of the common themes of the 21st Century romantic comedy is the ‘bad boy’. The bad boy become the good boy during the film and ends up with the girl. Why does he change?

1. He finds love

3. He finds a girl that he’s never found before
4. He loses the girl
5. He loses the girl that he realises is the girl he wants more than any other
6. She was right and he was wrong
