This is the ‘boy meets girl’ love story of two twelve year olds – Sam and Suzy – who run away together. Suzy lives on a beautiful and romantic New England island with her family. Sam is an orphan who is camping on the island with his Khaki Scout group. They are caught and separated. But love is too powerful to keep them apart and the scouts help them run away a second time. This time the family, the police, social services, and the scouts are involved in their recapture, which culminates in a dangerous series of events.
This is a fabulous film written and directed by Wes Anderson. It was shot around Rhode Island and the film work is both panoramic and personal. They focus on quirky character details and because it is based in the sixties, it has a very old-style vintage feel. The acting is superb and the parts fit together perfectly around the central love story.
